Michael AspinallOur client is an APAC-headquartered digital infrastructure developer building green AI compute campuses in the Nordics, drawn by the region's renewable power, resilient grid and favourable climate for cooling. With multiple sites moving through permitting and into construction, the business needed an Operations Director to own day-to-day operational delivery across two campuses.
This was a pivotal hire rather than a routine one. The role sits directly on the critical path between construction completion and revenue: whoever took the seat would shape how cleanly the client hit its commissioning and go-live targets across both sites. Leaving it vacant, or filling it badly, would have been felt immediately in the delivery schedule.
The talent pool made that harder. The number of operations leaders with genuine hyperscale commissioning and multi-site experience in-region is small, and the same names are pursued by every operator, developer and colocation provider scaling in the Nordics. The strongest candidate we identified was already in post elsewhere, with a three-month notice period - a long window in a market where good people are approached constantly.
We ran a targeted search across the Nordic data centre operations market, mapping candidates from hyperscale and colocation operators, critical facilities management providers and the commissioning functions of developers active in the region. From that longlist we built a curated shortlist of operations leaders with proven multi-site accountability and hands-on commissioning exposure.
The real work began after the offer was accepted. A three-month notice period is where senior placements are most often lost, so we managed both sides of the gap closely and continuously.
On the candidate side, that meant sustained contact throughout the wind-down at their previous employer — keeping them engaged, committed and insulated from the counter-offers and competing approaches that inevitably arrive when a senior operations leader resigns in a market this tight.
On the client side, it meant giving the hiring team the confidence to hold the seat rather than settle for an immediate start. We kept them fully informed on the candidate's position and progress so they could build the commissioning schedule around a known, reliable arrival date.
Our client had an experienced Operations Director in post on the date it had planned for, with full operational ownership across both campuses at exactly the point the sites needed senior operational leadership.
Because the start date held, the commissioning and go-live plan held with it. The client avoided the two most expensive outcomes of a stalled senior search: a delivery schedule slipping while a critical seat sits empty, and a restarted process burning another two to three months in a candidate pool that was already thin.
The placement has since become the foundation of a growing partnership. Delivering on a hire this visible, and managing the notice period without a wobble, has established First Point Group as a trusted partner as the client scales its Nordic footprint.
