Senior Infrastructure Engineer - HPC / Linux Platforms
Location: West Sussex (on-site)
The Company
Our client runs one of Europe's most powerful privately owned supercomputing environments, supporting complex scientific and industrial workloads at scale. They operate across multiple global sites and are continuously investing in next-generation compute capability. For engineers who want to work on serious infrastructure, not just maintain it, this is a rare opportunity.
Why This Role Exists
The business is expanding its compute platforms and needs a senior engineer who can take new technologies from evaluation through to production. This is not a BAU support role. You will own technical projects end-to-end: assessing emerging tools and platforms, running pilots, building the case for deployment, and then delivering it into the live environment with proper documentation and handover.
Alongside the project work, you will be a senior technical escalation point for the wider team. When difficult problems land, you are expected to lead the response. There is also a clear leadership trajectory here. You will mentor others, present to stakeholders, and develop the skills to move into a management position over time.
What You Will Be Doing
- Leading technical projects from scoping through to production delivery. You own the timeline, the stakeholder communication, and the quality of the outcome.
- Evaluating new compute technologies, running proof-of-concept work, and making recommendations to leadership on what to adopt and what to leave.
- Acting as the go-to person for complex Linux and infrastructure issues that the wider team cannot resolve.
- Working with global colleagues on platform rollouts, upgrades, and infrastructure changes across multiple sites.
- Maintaining and improving operational standards: monitoring, performance tuning, compliance, and security.
- Presenting findings, proposals, and project updates to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Supporting and mentoring more junior engineers. Sharing knowledge and helping raise the overall technical bar.
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years working in Linux systems administration or platform engineering, ideally in a large-scale or compute-intensive environment.
- Strong experience with infrastructure automation: tools like Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, or equivalent.
- Hands-on skills with containerisation (Docker at minimum, ideally orchestration experience as well).
- Scripting proficiency. Bash and Python as a minimum, with the ability to build tooling and automate repetitive work.
- Proven project delivery experience. You should be comfortable owning a piece of work from start to finish, not just executing tasks handed to you.
- Strong communication skills. This role involves regular stakeholder interaction and the ability to present technical concepts clearly.
- A genuine interest in emerging technology. You should be the kind of engineer who proactively keeps up with what is new and pushes to bring the best of it into your environment.
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Kubernetes, OpenStack, or CI/CD pipelines in a production setting.
- Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure) alongside on-premises infrastructure.
- Relevant certifications (Linux professional certs, ITIL, or similar).
- Exposure to GPU computing, HPC clustering, or parallel storage architectures.
