Senior BI Developer



Role Summary



Our client is looking for experienced Senior BI Developers to join a growing team responsible for understanding, designing, and building Business Intelligence solutions across the Full Development Lifecycle (FDLC).



The Senior BI Developer will contribute to technical strategy, architecture, frameworks and tooling while working closely with business stakeholders, technical teams and other BI professionals. The role requires strong hands-on experience across data wrangling, ETL/ELT, dimensional modelling, data warehousing, Power BI and Microsoft Azure technologies.



Key Responsibilities



Data Wrangling & ETL





  • Design, develop and maintain production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines.




  • Work extensively with SQL, SSIS, Azure Data Factory and Azure Synapse Analytics.




  • Analyse, cleanse, transform and integrate data from multiple sources.




  • Work with relational data sources including SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, CSV and Excel.




  • Understand and apply appropriate approaches to relational, dimensional and non-structured data.




  • Transform and conform diverse data sources into reliable business insights.




  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define business metrics and maintain clear data lineage.





Dimensional Modelling & Data Warehousing





  • Design and develop data warehouses and dimensional models using the Kimball star-schema methodology.




  • Build dimensional models from complex relational data structures.




  • Develop scalable and high-performing data warehouse solutions using Microsoft technologies.




  • Design both technical data models and user-friendly self-service data models.




  • Develop and optimise DAX measures and semantic models.




  • Build dashboards and reports to validate data models and support BI development and testing.




  • Provide technical guidance to Report Writers and Dashboard Developers.





BI & Visualisation





  • Develop and maintain Power BI dashboards, reports and semantic models.




  • Work with Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service and Power BI Apps.




  • Develop models using SQL Views, SSAS, Azure Synapse and Power BI.




  • Apply advanced DAX modelling and performance optimisation techniques.




  • Use tools such as DAX Studio and Tabular Editor where appropriate.




  • Support self-service BI and enable business users to access trusted, governed data.





Data Sources & Modern Data Technologies





  • Integrate data from mainstream enterprise systems including:





    • SAP




    • Oracle EBS




    • Salesforce




    • SharePoint




    • Microsoft Dynamics 365




    • Office 365




    • SQL-based systems






  • Work with REST APIs, JSON, XML, and SFTP/file-based integrations.




  • Understand and apply concepts relating to:





    • Master Data Management




    • Data Governance

    • Big Data




    • Streaming Data




    • IoT and Edge technologies




    • Advanced Analytics

  • Exposure to hybrid cloud environments and non-Microsoft cloud platforms such as AWS and Google Cloud.





Development, Deployment & DevOps





  • Develop effective CI/CD processes for BI solutions.




  • Work with Azure DevOps and Git/GitHub.




  • Support the development, deployment, maintenance and version control of BI solutions.




  • Follow appropriate development standards, testing practices and deployment processes.




  • Contribute to technical decisions around BI frameworks, tools and architecture.





Technical Requirements



Must Have





  • 10+ years of production experience in data analysis and data wrangling.




  • 10+ years of production experience building data warehouses and dimensional data models from relational data.




  • Strong production experience with:





    • Advanced SQL / T-SQL




    • SQL Server




    • SSIS




    • SQL Server Agent




    • Azure Data Factory




    • Azure Synapse Analytics




    • Power BI




    • SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)






  • Strong understanding and practical experience with Kimball dimensional modelling and star-schema methodology.




  • Proven experience across the Full Development Lifecycle (FDLC) of BI solutions.




  • Experience translating business requirements into technical BI solutions.




  • Experience developing, deploying and maintaining enterprise BI solutions.




  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.





Preferred / Advantageous





  • Experience with at least 3 modern data modelling/BI technologies, either on-premise or cloud-based, such as:





    • Microsoft SQL Server




    • Azure SQL




    • Azure Synapse Analytics




    • SSAS




    • Power BI






  • Extensive experience building star-schema dimensional data warehouses.




  • Advanced experience with DAX, DAX Studio, and Tabular Editor.




  • Experience building technical and self-service semantic models.




  • Experience with Power BI Desktop, Service and Apps.




  • Experience working with Microsoft Fabric.




  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Git, and GitHub.




  • Experience integrating REST APIs and processing JSON/XML/SFTP data.




  • Exposure to AWS or Google Cloud.




  • Experience with data governance, master data management and data lineage.




  • Experience working with non-relational, public, unstructured and streaming data.

Qualifications



Essential





  • Matric / Grade 12.




  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data/IT-related field, or equivalent relevant experience.




  • 10+ years' relevant BI/data development experience.





Advantageous





  • Microsoft certifications in Power BI, Azure Data, SQL Server, Data Engineering or related technologies.




  • Relevant Microsoft BI/Data certifications.
