Network Engineer

About the Opportunity
We are recruiting on behalf of one of South Africa's most respected names in telecommunications and ICT infrastructure: a business that has spent years building and operating some of the country's most critical connectivity backbone. With a significant and growing footprint across the enterprise and wholesale connectivity market, this is an organisation that engineers are proud to put on their CV. This is a senior individual contributor role for a Network Engineer who thrives in complex, high-availability environments and has the technical depth to make a meaningful impact on infrastructure that operates at genuine national scale.
The Role
As a Senior Network Engineer, you will take ownership of the design, implementation, and ongoing optimisation of the client's core and backbone network infrastructure. You will work alongside a technically strong team, contributing to both strategic architecture decisions and day-to-day operational excellence. The role demands someone who is equally comfortable in a planning session and a terminal window.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deploy core routing and switching infrastructure, ensuring high availability and performance across the backbone network
- Manage and optimise routing protocols, particularly BGP, OSPF, and MPLS, driving continuous improvement across the network estate
- Lead troubleshooting on complex, high-impact network incidents, working through to root cause and implementing durable, long-term solutions
- Produce and maintain detailed network documentation and contribute to capacity planning exercises
- Provide technical input into infrastructure procurement decisions
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including NOC, security, and solutions engineering
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to more junior engineers where required
What We Are Looking For
- Minimum five years of hands-on network engineering experience, with demonstrable depth in core and backbone environments rather than purely enterprise LAN/WAN
- Strong working knowledge of BGP, OSPF, MPLS, and QoS
- Comfortable operating across multiple vendor platforms: Cisco, Juniper, Nokia, or similar
- Experience within a telecommunications carrier, ISP, or backbone infrastructure environment is highly advantageous and will be weighted strongly in shortlisting
- A relevant networking certification at professional level or above is preferred; candidates with equivalent demonstrated experience will be considered
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills are non-negotiable
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both peers and non-technical stakeholders
Why Apply?
This is an opportunity to join a business with genuine scale and complexity in its network infrastructure — the kind of environment where your technical decisions carry real weight. The client has a track record of investing in their engineering talent and offers a stable, long-term career environment for the right person.
