IT Infrastructure Consultant – Public Transport Technology

Location: JHB 

We are looking for a highly skilled IT Infrastructure Consultant to design and tailor IT infrastructure architectures for mission-critical public transport technology solutions. You will interpret defined system requirements and design client-specific infrastructures that meet operational, security, and performance needs. This role requires deep expertise in virtualization, cybersecurity, disaster recovery, high availability, networking, and hybrid/cloud infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

• Solution-Based Infrastructure Design


• Analyse system IT architecture requirements (fare management, fleet management, real-time passenger information, control centre systems, etc.).


• Translate solution requirements into client-specific infrastructure designs.


• Assess client environments and identify gaps between current infrastructure and system requirements.


• Produce High-Level Designs (HLD) and Low-Level Designs (LLD) aligned with performance, availability, security, integration, and scalability needs.


• Client Environment Assessment


• Conduct assessments of data centres, cloud, and network environments.


• Evaluate compute, storage, virtualization, networking, and security readiness.


• Identify risks and provide actionable remediation plans.


• Architecture & Technical Expertise


• Design virtualized server environments (VMware, Hyper-V, etc.) based on system sizing requirements.


• Architect hybrid or cloud-hosted deployments (Azure, AWS, or local cloud platforms).


• Ensure correct sizing of CPU, memory, storage, and IOPS.


• Design secure network architectures with segmentation, firewalls, and remote connectivity.


• Define high-availability, clustering, and redundancy strategies.


• Security & Compliance


• Align infrastructure designs with cybersecurity best practices and transport authority standards.


• Implement identity management, encryption, endpoint protection, and network security controls.


• Support compliance with data protection and payment security requirements (e.g., PCI-DSS).


• Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity


• Design DR and BC strategies with defined RPO/RTO.


• Implement backup, replication, and failover solutions.


• Ensure mission-critical transport systems achieve required resilience levels.


• Stakeholder & Pre-Sales Engagement


• Provide infrastructure expertise during solution design and tender processes.


• Present architectures to technical and operational stakeholders.


• Collaborate with software, implementation, and project teams.

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).


• 5+ years’ experience in IT infrastructure architecture and design.


• Strong virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V) and cloud platform experience (Azure, AWS, or local cloud).


• Expertise in LAN/WAN, firewalls, routing, switching, VPNs.


• Experience with high-availability, disaster recovery, and secure system design.


• Strong cybersecurity knowledge.


• Ability to interpret complex system architecture and translate it into robust infrastructure solutions.


• Excellent communication and documentation skills for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
