Job Purpose
The Account Lead is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational performance, and commercial success of a portfolio of mission-critical data centre accounts across Africa. The role ensures the highest standards of operational excellence, reliability, client satisfaction, financial performance, and regulatory compliance while driving business growth and developing high-performing teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for multiple mission-critical data centre operations across the African region.
- Develop and execute operational strategies aligned with business objectives, client expectations, and industry best practices.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, resilience, and service delivery.
- Support regional business expansion through operational readiness and governance.
Operational Management
- Lead the day-to-day management of hyperscale and colocation data centre operations.
- Ensure optimal facility performance, capacity planning, uptime, resilience, and lifecycle management.
- Maintain compliance with Tier III and Tier IV operational principles, statutory regulations, and company standards.
- Oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programmes to minimise operational risk.
- Implement operational governance frameworks that support consistent service delivery across all sites.
Client & Account Management
- Act as the executive point of contact for strategic clients.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive engagement and operational excellence.
- Ensure contractual obligations, Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are consistently achieved.
- Identify opportunities to expand services, improve account performance, and increase client retention.
Financial Management
- Own account budgets, financial forecasting, and cost control.
- Ensure operational expenditure remains within approved budgets while maintaining service quality.
- Drive revenue growth through account expansion, operational efficiencies, and value-added services.
- Monitor financial performance and implement corrective actions where required.
Leadership & People Management
- Lead and develop multidisciplinary operational teams across multiple countries.
- Establish organisational structures that support business growth and operational excellence.
- Manage workforce planning, recruitment, succession planning, performance management, and employee development.
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Risk, Compliance & Governance
- Develop and maintain risk management frameworks for mission-critical operations.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate operational, technical, and commercial risks.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, regulatory, and client requirements.
- Lead incident management, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
Vendor & Commercial Management
- Manage strategic supplier and contractor relationships.
- Oversee vendor performance against contractual obligations and service level agreements.
- Support procurement activities, contract negotiations, and commercial reviews.
- Ensure suppliers deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective services.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical oversight for electrical, mechanical, HVAC, controls, and critical infrastructure systems.
- Support major infrastructure projects, capacity expansions, and live-environment upgrades.
- Lead technical and commercial due diligence assessments for new facilities and acquisitions.
- Ensure infrastructure changes are executed without compromising availability.
Business Growth
- Support new business development initiatives and operational mobilisation of new clients.
- Develop governance models and operational frameworks for new accounts.
- Identify opportunities for operational innovation and regional expansion.

- Data centre availability and uptime.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline is essential.
- Professional certifications in Facilities Management, Data Centre Operations, Project Management, Critical Environments, or Health & Safety are advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum 7 years' experience in data centre operations; experience in other mission-critical or critical environments will be considered where direct data centre experience is limited.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in a management role, with 7 or more years of leadership experience preferred, managing multidisciplinary operational teams.
- Demonstrated experience in facilities management within mission-critical environments is essential. Candidates with predominantly IT infrastructure or server management experience, without responsibility for critical facilities infrastructure, will not be considered suitable.
- Proven experience managing hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data centre environments.
- Experience overseeing multi-site and multi-country operations.
- Strong commercial, financial, and client account management experience.
- Demonstrated success delivering infrastructure upgrades and major projects in live operational environments.
- Experience leading operational governance, vendor management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Technical Knowledge
- Critical electrical distribution systems.
- Mechanical cooling systems (HVAC and chilled water).
- UPS, generators, switchgear, and power distribution.
- Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS).
